Stay Healthy During Dreary Winter Months! Try Thieves “Tea”!

Thieves "Tea"Thieves “Tea”, a great addition to your winter immune support regimen!

The reason I put the quotations around tea is because in order for it to be considered an actual tea it must be made from a specific plant (see my page on tea for more info).  Thieves “Tea” is great in winter because it can really provide extra support for your immune system health! Thieves essential oil is a blend of clove bud oil, lemon peel oil, cinnamon bark oil, eucalyptus radiata leaf oil, and rosemary leaf oil.  Why is it called “Thieves“? Glad you asked! This oil is inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic blend composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals used while robbing the dead and dying.  Now that you know the somewhat gruesome background, I’ll tell you why you should look past it and incorporate this amazing beverage into your immune support regimen!

When I have made Thieves “Tea” for people who are interested in maintaining a healthy immune system, the majority have said they love the way it tastes and the benefits it can bring!   Most Thieves “Tea” recipes I have seen call for a tea bag of your choice, honey, and thieves essential oil.  I personally like to drink my normal tea as it is, so I leave the tea bag out.  The reason I add more than just thieves essential oil is because I actually despise the taste of cloves, which is the first ingredient listed on the label!  I also enjoy the added benefits of lemon, frankincense, and peppermint.  Lemon adds an extra boost of flavor, peppermint creates a calming, soothing effect, and frankincense can bring a sense of balance and grounding when your body is in need.  I am sure there are countless versions of Thieves “Tea” out there, but I have found a recipe that I love and would like to share it with you!

**Do not leave the honey out! It is vital in helping the oils disperse throughout the hot water because as you know, oil floats in water! So, unless you would like a mouthful of oil on the first sip, be sure to use honey! I prefer raw, unfiltered, organic honey, but you can use whatever you have on hand.  Place the honey at the bottom of your mug, add the oils, and stir well to be sure the oils are incorporated into the honey before adding the hot water.

DIY Deodorant with Essential Oils

Why should I bother with a DIY Deodorant!?

This DIY deodorant recipe is simple, chemical free and all natural! Store-bought deodorants and antiperspirants have SO many toxins these days! Have you ever looked at the ingredients in your chosen brand!? It is appalling what companies are putting in their products and that the FDA is allowing it to happen! Don’t believe me? Take a look for yourself! I guarantee you will see a bunch of words you can’t pronounce and various fake fragrances depending on the scent you prefer.

Unfortunately, I started using antiperspirant deodorant in middle school and only stopped a few years ago! I was rubbing this toxic substance under my arms DAILY (or even multiple times a day if I had gym or a sports practice!) for around 12 years! No one really knew or cared if it had chemicals in it as long as you didn’t smell or actually sweat.  God forbid you went to put a book on the top shelf of your locker and someone saw your “pit stains”!

DIY DeodorantA few years ago I started making my own DIY deodorant after I realized how many toxins can be in store-bought brands and am using the same recipe today! It is simple, yet so effective! This recipe allows you to sweat, which your body needs to do in order to get rid of toxins! Even though you sweat a little, you wont stink! The active ingredients in this recipe take away odor (baking soda), soak up moisture (arrowroot powder), and get rid of bacteria (tea tree oil), which is what causes the “B.O.” in the first place! The coconut oil is simply there to bind the two powders since it wouldn’t really be effective to just toss some powder at your dry arm pits and hope something sticks!

It MAY take a few days for your body to adjust to being allowed to sweat, but after those first few days I guarantee you will be hooked! When I say this I mean that your body may sweat a lot in the first few days because it wants to rid all the toxins while it can, but once your body realizes you aren’t going to put those nasty chemicals back on to block the sweat, your body will regulate itself and the excessive sweating will cease! This may not happen to you, but I am just putting it out there in case because I have heard many people say this to me and I tell them to just stick it out a couple of days.  So make a batch on a Friday night, let your body adjust over the weekend, and you will be smelling great by Monday!

I love this deodorant because it’s easy to make, cheap, and works great! If you are not a big fan of lavender, or are making it for a guy, you may want to swap it out for another one of your favorite Young Living essential oils, but definitely be sure to add the tea tree! It is a major component of the deodorant and one of the main reasons why it works so well! Give this recipe a try and let me know your thoughts!

Luscious Locks Leave-in Conditioner

Why I decided to make Luscious Locks Leave-in Conditioner

Through Pinterest I have read a TON of recipes for leave-in conditioners and other hair health DIYs!  I decided to take some aspects of various recipes that I felt would work best and give it a shot! This led to the Luscious Locks Leave-in Conditioner recipe! PLUS, it is free of harsh chemicals and fake fragrances that other leave-in conditioners have!

I recently decided that I was going to get rid of all hair/beauty products loaded with chemicals.  This decision came shortly after I discovered the FREE app “Think Dirty”.  (If you haven’t heard of it, I HIGHLY recommend downloading it!) Warning: You may not like what you see!

This app allows you to scan the bar code of health/beauty products or type in the name and immediately see a list of ingredients.  If applicable, these ingredients are categorized into “carcinogenicity”, “developmental and reproductive toxicity”, and “allergies and immunotoxicities”.   Based on the ingredients and their ratings, the product is then rated on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most detrimental to your health.  When I saw that the majority of my daily products were rated a 6 or above, I decided I needed to make a change!

After some research, I realized that replacing shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, and lotion with natural, chemical-free products was not that difficult to do, but when it came to a “leave-in” conditioner it seemed like that was going to be a bit tricky, especially if I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a name brand product.

**The ONLY thing I would change about this recipe is utilizing a bigger bottle (therefore multiplying the recipe) because I have very long hair and the 2 oz bottle only lasts me about a week! Other than that, this recipe is amazing and I definitely recommend trying it out!

Leave-in Conditioner

I plan on trying out more natural, chemical-free DIY recipes over time for other products that I am replacing in my home, so stay tuned!

Kombucha: An Ancient Elixer

So, what the heck is this stuff!?

Kombucha: An Ancient Elixer, really? Some of you have probably never heard of this amazing ancient beverage called Kombucha (pronounced pretty much like you would think kam-boo-cha), but it has actually been around for THOUSANDS of years! It is claimed to have originated in China during the Tsin Dynasty in 221 B.C. (meaning even before Jesus was born!)  Merriam-Webster defines Kombucha as: a gelatinous mass of symbiotic bacteria (as Acetobacter xylinum) and yeasts (as of the genera Brettanomyces and Saccharomyces) grown to produce a fermented beverage held to confer health benefits.  In short, it is a fermented tea with tons of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that provides amazing heath benefits.  To answer the question you may be thinking though, it only contains trace amounts of alcohol after the fermentation process is complete, so no, you won’t get drunk! *There is Kombucha beer out there though, which I have had and it is delicious! If you are in the Buffalo area like myself, check out Handlebar, a bicycle themed bar on Swan St!  My favorite is their raspberry Kombucha beer! Also, Bootleg Bucha is an amazing place to get high quality, handmade BUCH in the Buffalo area! Check them out!

Aside from being delicious, Kombucha is also very nutritious! It is known primarily for its “probiotic” properties because it aides in digestion, but is also great for detoxifying the body and boosting energy levels because of the countless vitamins, minerals, and enzymes!  I drink it daily about 30 minutes after I eat lunch or dinner to help digest my food and give me a boost of energy!

Don’t be afraid of the BUCH!

Kombucha is SO easy to make and with it costing $3+ per bottle in the store, you can save so much money! Many people are scared off by the the weird name and fact that you have to “ferment” something, but believe me, the hardest part is waiting for this delicious, nutritious beverage to be ready to drink!  The simple supplies and step-by-step instructions are listed in the second graphic below.  Basically, all you need is tea (preferably higher quality, so no, not brands like Salada or Lipton!), filtered water, sugar, and a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast).  The concept is similar to making wine in terms of the fermentation process where the yeast, or SCOBY in this case, feeds off the sugar to ferment the tea liquid.   Except with Kombucha, it doesn’t turn to alcohol, you don’t have to wait nearly as long, and it’s much better for you!

You can mscobyake your own SCOBY from an unflavored bottle of store bought Kombucha, but I prefer to get a high quality one from a reputable company for guaranteed results (and because making your own takes around 2 weeks).  I prefer to buy my SCOBY from, Brindle Southern Farms, which you can get easily from Etsy for under $10!  After you have your SCOBY, you will not need to buy another one unless you let it die.  Yes, this thing is a live culture! If you ever want to take a break from brewing, simply place the SCOBY in the refrigerator with 1-2 cups of the left over Kombucha and it will last a few months! It will also “grow” and form new “babies” from your original “mother”.  This is great because you can simply remove the “babies” from the bottom (it is the layer that forms underneath) and save for later use by refrigerating them or share with a friend and help them start brewing their own Kombucha! *Beware: as you can see in the picture to the left, a SCOBY is not the most attractive looking thing, but don’t let that deter you! It won’t bite and will provide you with an amazing beverage!

amberbottle16The brewing process for the recipe provided in this post takes 7-10 days depending on the temperature of your house (longer if it’s colder, shorter if it’s warmer).  The overall prep takes around 15-20 and then you let the tea/sugar mixture cool for 1-2 hours until it is room temp before you put the SCOBY into the tea mixture. If you add it too soon, you will burn the SCOBY and it will “die”, so be sure it is room temperature! Once you add everything to a 1 gallon glass container, all you have to do is cover it with a coffee filter and place the container in a warm, dark spot in your house then wait 7-10 days! Taste your brew after 7 days to see how fast the fermentation process is occurring.  If it still tastes sweet, let it ferment longer and be sure to taste it every day until it has a slight sweetness, but is not vinegary.  After that, transfer your BUCH to GLASS bottles and place in the refrigerator.  You can reuse any glass bottle that seals well, but I prefer using the “swing top” amber bottles to keep it as fresh as possible. You can find them easily on Amazon or your local brewing store.  *If you would like a little more “zing” to your brew, place the bottles in a dark place for and additional 2-3 days to add a little carbonation, then place in refrigerator.  Then it’s time to enjoy!

I LOVE making my own “BUCH” because it is simple, quick, cheap, nutritious, and super tasty! You can choose the type of tea you use and really customize the flavor after you get more experienced! I have used teas that have a natural fruit flavor and prefer it over adding juices or fruit to my brew for flavor.  I do love adding Young Living essential oils to my Kombucha though right before drinking.  Not only does it enhance the flavor, but increases the health benefits as well! Some of my favorites to add are grapefruit, lemon, ginger, and tangerine! The great thing is…its up to YOU! Give this recipe a try and be sure to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or just want to chat about how amazing Kombucha is!

Remember These, Anyone? Jump Rope is back!

Jump Rope-Give it a Second Chance!

If you haven’t jump roped since Elementary school like the majority of adults, you should give it a second chance!

I recently started incorporating the jump rope into my workout routine after reading many articles about how great it is (which I was skeptical about).  I don’t know about you, but I personally had not jump roped (jumped rope!?) since Elementary school before beginning this routine. I figured it couldn’t hurt to give it a chance though and now I absolutely LOVE it! Not only is it amazing cardio, but a full body workout if done properly! It can also improve skills like eye/hand/foot coordination, agility, and endurance!

So, I’ll admit, the first few days I could do MAYBE 10 consecutive rotations before I would ultimately stumble and whip myself in the leg, but I stuck it out and after a few months I feel like a pro! It works your core and legs so effectively while also providing portable, efficient cardio! They have jump ropes with weighted handles too for a bonus arm workout! Also, there are so many variations you can try, which increase the difficulty and calorie burning opportunities! (one-legged, double -legged, criss cross, ski jumps, double go around in one jump, backwards, etc!)

My current jump rope routine I use as a warm-up for my workout:

Total time: 10-15 minutes

  • 1 minute: easy pace
  • 3 minutes: moderate pace
  • 30 sec: recovery pace (catch your breath)
  • 2 minutes: fast pace
  • 30 sec: recovery pace (catch your breath)
  • 3 minutes: Forward and backward jumps (jump forward across the room, then go back the same way jumping backwards, but keep the rope going forward)
  • 30 sec: recovery
  • Optional 2 minutes: ski jumps (basically just jump in place side to side keeping your feet facing forward)
  • 1 minute: cool down

jumo rope

I plan to continue incorporating jump roping into my daily workout routine and build up to a consecutive 30 minutes to use as my full cardio workout 1-2 days per week! It will be an efficient, no excuses workout in the summer too!

Give it a try yourself and let me know how it goes!
